How to Keep Your Skin Healthy This Fall

It's finally November, which means sweater weather is right around the corner or already here for you. While you're bringing out your favorite knits and sipping on seasonal lattes, it's also time to start thinking about how your skincare routine will change as temperatures fall. You may not think to change up the regimen you've religiously been following, but seasons can actually determine what your skin needs to keep its glow. Going from Texas to New Hampshire (where there are real changes in weather) has made me think differently about caring for my skin. Even though it's naturally quite oily, my skin still takes a hit as I get into the fall and winter months. I was using way too many oil control and matte products, which actually dehydrated my skin when combined with the dry and cool weather.

Step 1: Wash

I've had to stop using my staple face wash: African Black Soap. *sobs heard from the distance* While an effective soap, it's also a harsh one. It really reduces the oil on your face, which is great for those warm, humid months where you could fry an egg on your forehead. In the winter, it's just too much. As it gets colder and dryer, stop using harsh soaps that completely strip the oil from your face. You're going to need that natural moisture.

Instead, I'm using the Clarisonic Refreshing Gel Cleanser. I was pleasantly surprised by this face wash. I have pretty sensitive skin, so I was worried that a gel wash would irritate it. My experience has been quite the opposite. This cleanser is very gentle, but still controls oil. It doesn't leave my skin feeling stripped the way African Black Soap does. There have been times after washing my face that I completely forgot to even put moisturizer on because my skin still feels so hydrated afterwards.

 If you're really trying to step up your skincare routine, ditch the washcloths and get yourself the Clarisonic Mia 1 cleansing brush. + It's effective and versatile This brush really does the job. Since I've been using it, I've noticed a significant change in the texture of my skin. It's a lot smoother, and the pores that used to be very obvious on my nose and cheeks are starting to shrink. I can use the deep pore brush for when I feel like my face needs a more rigorous washing or the sonic brush for days when my skin isnt't really subject to dirt or makeup. The health of my skin is really most noticeable now in the application of makeup. The canvas on which you make art matters just as much as the art itself.

+ The brush heads don't stain or get gross I'm sure you know well how annoying it can be to have your skin products or really any objects you touch get dirtied by makeup or dingy over time. I love these brush heads because they don't stain at all. I've used them to wash off my makeup, and after cleaning it with a bit of soap it returns to white. I took the picture of my brush above today, and I've been using it for almost 3 weeks now. The brush head still looks brand new. It also doesn't start smelling moldy or wet either. It has a cap with holes on top so the brush can breathe when it's not in use.

Step 2: Toner

Mario Badescu is my go to for a lot of other skincare products. I'm currently using the Special Cleansing Lotion "C". This is just that additional layer of love and care for your skin that helps improves things like surface blemishes and uneven skin tone. I recommend going to MB and shopping for a toner according to your skin type.

Step 3: Moisturizer

***The Key Step!*** 

EVERYBODY, whether your skin is oily, combination, or dry, needs to start using a thicker moisturizer and lip balm as it gets colder. This is the last step in your routine and the final layer of protection you have from the environment. Shea butter, cocoa butter, and other natural "butter"-like balms are great.

Really pay attention to the crevices and corners of your face when moisturizing, these parts dry out and crack first. The corners of your eyes, creases of your nose, and lips need the most attention. You also still need sunscreen.

I'm currently using a mix of MB's Aloe Moisturizer (with SPF 15), Shea butter, and rosewater. For a while I was just using the aloe moisturizer and rosewater, but my face still felt a little too dry afterwards. I rub Shea butter into the lotion to give it a little more moisture.

  Save your matte products for the end, like in a primer, foundation, or finishing spray. Don't skirt around buying a more hydrating lotion because you fear your face will be too oily.  


...and that's it! I like to keep my routine very simple and quick. I don't have time as a college student to be spending 15 minutes on my skin. That's for my pamper days.


Additional Tips

+ Drink up! Hydrating from the inside is also very important for your skin.

+ Think about getting a humidifier. Indoor heaters can also suck the moisture out of a room and cause skin conditions like eczema to flare up.

+ Natural ingredients are always great, but even more important when it's cold outside. Essential oils mixed with creams can be really healing for the skin.

+ Think soothing, calming, and repairing. Winter is when your skin is at its most vulnerable. It may not be the time to start pulling out your most aggressive acne creams and exfoliators. You don't want to agitate your already fragile skin.
